At the Strength and Health Picnic 17-year-old Ronnie Walter, of the Philadelphia WL Club, performed an amazing feat of endurance by snatching bodyweight (135 lbs.) for 45 repetitions, setting the weight down on the platform each time, and taking a breath between reps.

INTERNATIONAL WL TOURNAMENT IN PRAGUE October 4, 5, 1956

Reported by Frank Mensik Bruno Nyberg, International WL Federation President, accompanied his Finnish team to Prague for a three-nation competition the first of October. Although other countries were invited (East Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary), they did not appear. Poland won the meet, with two lifters making good totals, notably Zielinski, in the 132 lb. class, with a nice 726 total, and Czepulkowski in the 148 lb. division with 770. Several of the best Czech lifters were ill or otherwise unable to lift-Belza and Psenicka. Makkinen, the Finnish heavy was. not in his best form, but won quite easily with a 913 total.

APOLLON BARBELL CLUB VS. RIKER'S ISLAND NEW YORK, SEPT. 3, 1956

Two keen rivals for a place on the U. S. Olympic Team are Frank Spellman and Dr. Peter George, shown here in an informal training session at Muscle Beach, where Pete stopped off for a day or two on his way to Hawaii, where he has been assigned by the Army. At left, Frank is cleaning 350 lbs., and at right, Pete does the same poundage. Some weeks later, Pete tore a knee ligament in training in Honolulu, but still thinks he will be able to lift at Melbourne.

RESULTS OF KENTUCKIANA WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD AT CHARLESTOWN HIGH SCHOOL, CHARLESTOWN, IND., SEPT. 9, 1956 In one of the most closely contested meets held in this area, the Wildcat B.B. Club of Lexington, Ky., edged out Malick's Gym by 21-20 in the meet sponsored by the newly formed Charlestown Barbell Club.

Ronald "Spec" Lacy, runner-up in the '56 Mr. America, won the outstanding lifter trophy with a total of 765 lbs. in the 181 lb. class, representing the Wildcat B.B. Club. George Hudson, Malick's Gym, won the outstanding teen-age lifter trophy with a total of 670 lbs.

Clyde Emrich journeyed from Chicago to give an exhibition, which was very good, even though he

failed to do his best, as he went all out to set new records, but it seemed it was not the day. He did show that he had it in his power to do so in the near future. The crowd was well pleased with his performance and gave Clyde a well-deserved reception. We wish him success in his future performances. The line-ups of the meet: 123 lb. Class

KONO SMASHES WORLD RECORDS Lifts Record Lightheavy Clean and Jerk Back in September Tommy Kono stuffed himself with food and drink to weigh 183 lbs., and went out and beat Vorobyev's press record in the 198 lb. class by lifting 3221⁄2 lbs. On October 12th he broke another Russian record, held by 181 lb. T. Lomakin by hoisting a record 3821⁄2 lbs. in the clean and jerk. This is the best news the American WL Team has had in months. since it signifies that Tommy, who had been having a bit of trouble in the C & J, has probably straightened out his form on this lift, and since he already holds the Press record in the 181 lb. class. he looks like a sure thing for an Olympic title at Melbourne.

VINCI REGAINS C & J WORLD RECORD

Mighty Mouse Lifts 296 Lbs.

At the Eastern Olympic Try-outs in Cleveland on Oct. 7th, York's mighty midget, Chuck Vinci, regained the World Record in the 123 lb. class, lately lost to Chinese lifter Chen Tsin-Kai, who did 2934 lbs. Chuck lifted just an average total in the regular lifting: 230, 215, 280-725 lbs., but after several extra attempts, he successfully cleaned and jerked 296 lbs. Totals of the other two York men, Berger and Emrich, were far below par. Berger got the same. total as Vinci-725, some 40 lbs. below his training best, and Clyde also failed on his second and third attempts, having to be content with 300, 270, 370-940 total.
